NIME 2026 Second Call for Contributions

Just sent it

Hey @panosghikas just writing back here in case others are looking for the same answer; for music submissions it’s only one primary area for the submission. I had thought it was a paper track submission, which also lets you submit up to three secondary areas. For this, please pick the one that you feel is the most relevant

Good to know, thanks Courtney!

Hi - a deadline day question. I’m uncertain as to what counts towards the word count. I know that references do not, but how about:

  • Abstract
  • Ethical Standard
  • Author Contributions
  • Acknowledgements

I just need to if I need to do some last minute cutting, since I assumed the word count was just for the main text.

Hi Jesper, of those sections you mention above, only the abstract would have been counted towards the part of the word count. If you want to double-check your submission, you can get in touch with the Paper Chairs at papers@nime2026.org

Ok - that’s completely different from last year then - NIME 2025 did not count the Abstract.
I will definitely email the Paper Chairs then, since I think with Abstract I’m just over the 4000 word count.

Hi Courtney, I am writing a workshop proposal and would like to know what the ethics statement needs to include. Is there a template? As this is a workshop with participants, should I provide a statement for each applicable section from the NIME Code of Ethics document, specifically section 4 ā€œPRINCIPLES & CODE OF PRACTICE IN STUDIES WITH HUMAN PARTICIPANTSā€? And if a detail is missing, would that be grounds for rejection, or would I be given a chance to add what is needed? Many thanks, Panos

Hi @panosghikas, thanks for reaching out!

There isn’t a template, as most research will vary in terms of what ethical considerations are made in carrying out research. Generally, the purpose of the Ethics Statement is for reflection and disclosure of research practices and consideration for ethical values at NIME, which are not only around health and safety but also inclusivity, accessibility, animal rights, socio-economic fairness, and environmental awareness.

You can have a look at the NIME Principles & Code of Practice on Ethical Research for a list of items to consider in your research and report in the Ethics Statement in your submission, where applicable. Likewise, you can have a look at some of the past proceedings to see how others have documented their ethics. We don’t publish workshop proceedings but you can check out some of the past papers proceedings for examples.

For instance, if you did work with human participants around this submission as you note, you will probably have some information about how they consented to participation, how their data was handled, or how you selected participants or incorporated diverse perspectives into your research.

For a workshop, there usually will also be a consideration about how you’ll handle/manage data if you plan to collect any and your intention to adhere to standards set by NIME’s ethics, environmental, and diversity committees. If you have gone through or are planning to go through a specific organisational/institutional ethical approval for your work, you can report it here as well. Again, this will depend on the specific nature of the work.

Work is not typically rejected for a missing Ethics Statement but reviewers may highlight concerns around ethics depending on the nature of the workshop and the work cannot be included in the conference unless we have the ethics information by the camera-ready deadline.

You can reach out to the Workshop Chairs if you have any specifics you’d like to get support on too at workshops@nime2026.org

Hope this helps!

This is very useful - thank you Courtney!
